Transporter-mediated ecdysteroid trafficking across cell membranes: A novel target for insect growth regulators
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ecdysteroids are a class of steroid hormones in arthropods that control molting and metamorphosis through interaction with intracellular nuclear receptors. In contrast to the extensive literature describing their biosynthetic pathways signaling components, little has been known about how these traveling into out cells lipid bilayers cell membranes. Recently, series studies conducted fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster revealed membrane transporters have critical functions trafficking ecdysteroids across membranes, challenging classical simple diffusion model hormone transport. Here we summarize recent advances our understanding involved ecdysteroid Drosophila, particular focus on Ecdysone Importer (EcI) is uptake peripheral tissues. We then discuss potential advantage EcI blockers as novel pest management tool compared insect growth regulators.

Alkylene-bis-isothiocyanates: Novel Insect Growth Regulators
In search for selective anti-insect agents some monoand bis-isothiocyanates were prepared and tested on third instar larvae of Manduca sexta. The alkylene-bis-isothiocyanates 4, 5 and 6 had a novel effect preventing formation of the abdominal spiracles and of the hooks (crochets) at the following molt to the 4th instar. Some of these larvae died in the molt, while spiracles remained absent also...
متن کاملInsect Growth Regulators for Insect Pest Control*
Insecticides with growth regulating properties (IGR) may adversely affect insects by regulating or inhibiting specific biochemical pathways or processes essential for insect growth and development. Some insects exposed to such compounds may die due to abnormal regulation of hormone-mediated cell or organ development. Other insects may die either from a prolonged exposure at the developmental st...
متن کاملEffect of two insect growth regulators on the ecdysteroid contents in eggs of the mealworm
RH-0345 (halofenozide), a bisacylhydrazine derivative, is a nonsteroidal ecdysteroid agonist that mimics the action of the moulting hormones, while KK-42, an imidazole compound, is a potent inhibitor of ecdysteroid biosynthesis. Previous results suggested that the observed reduction of ecdysteroid titre, leading to a reduction of reproductive capacity in the mealworm Tenebrio molitor, is due to...
متن کاملInsect growth regulators and insect control: a critical appraisal.
Insect growth regulators (IGRs) of the juvenile hormone type alter physiological processes essential to insect development and appear to act specifically on insects. Three natural juvenile hormones have been found in insects but not in other organisms. Future use of antagonists or inhibitors of hormone synthesis may be technically possible as an advantageous extension of pest control by IGRs. A...
متن کاملEcdysteroid Production by a Continuous Insect Cell Line
The spent medium from ten established cell lines was extracted and tested for ecdysteroids by radioimmunoassay. Of t h e seven lepidopteran lines tested, only IAL-TNDI and MRRL-CH showed evidence of ecdysteroid production. However, t h e results were erratic and difficult to evaluate and these lines were dropped from further consideration. However, of t h e three cockroach cell lines tested, on...
